United States House of Representatives and Senators

Dear Congress Leaders:

We, the undersigned religious and lay leaders, respectfully request that a path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented Americans be included in the Build Back Better budget reconciliation aid package.

Moses taught us: “Do not deprive the foreigner of justice … Remember that you were a slave in Egypt and that the Lord your God redeemed you from there.” (Deuteronomy 24: 17-18)

During the pandemic, our immigrant brothers have worked long hours in grueling jobs with very few protections and seen little justice. As essential workers, they have risked their lives for our country in the face of a virus that has killed more than half a million Americans. As human beings, they have suffered disease and death at a disproportionate rate.

For decades, undocumented Americans have been essential workers and essential human beings – community members, neighbors, friends, and family. And yet they have lived in fear, without basic rights, and without government support when times are tough.

We know that you understand this injustice and support a path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented Americans. We also know that, given the current political context, the most realistic way to achieve this is through the budget reconciliation process.

As fellow believers, we urge you to heed Moses’ call. It is high time that justice was done for undocumented immigrants. Let’s go together to the Promised Land. Can we count on you to take us there?

Blessings,
